My work is of and about painting. Current work consists of two inquiries: a conversation between video and painting and a conversation between formalism and gesture. The video/painting works are memorials: Marsden Hartley, Emily Dickinson, Gustaf Carlson (Great-Grandfather), Mt. Washington, christmasnite (messianic time), Falling, Getting up, Johns’ Body, Naked, Less. They speak of personal history, painting history and tragic world history. The formalist paintings are lovingly made by hand and refer to the intelligent play that abstraction offers. Central to current work are questions of exhibition and distribution. The video/paintings present complex layers of viewing experience that aims to impact the body. The formalist paintings, during COVID, were all given away.
